3rd…2nd…1st…

We ran three young horses yesterday in bumpers and all ran really encouraging races. PHIL HEALY got the day underway with Bradley Roberts in the saddle, a stronger gallop would of suited her, she was finishing her race well. They do go a crawl in these all weather bumpers sometimes and they turn into a sprint. 3rd for Phil Healy and a good result.

The same thing happened to BABY BEN. The starter let them go and they walked for the first furlong before going a very slow pace. The race again turned into a sprint and he found one with too much speed. 2nd though, a great result for BDR Syndicates, they have a nice horse to go forward with. A spare ride for Craig Nichol, poor Kielan was stuck on the motorway with many other jockeys and horse boxes.

The highlight of the day though was POP THE CHAMPAGNE at Lingfield. Sometimes you get a surprise result and although poppy shows us plenty at home, yesterday was all about getting her on the racecourse for the first time. It looked like a nice bumper on paper with plenty of runners. A strong pace was set by the Tony Carol horse, ‘Poppy’ and Max started to make they’re move and went wide round the bend to give her some space. She had plenty to do on the home straight, but she took off and showed a brilliant turn of foot to get up by half a length. A very well judged ride by Max, well done to him. Talking about well judged… Gwyn Wigley rides Poppy almost every day at home and gets on with her really well, he has believed in her ability from day one. He was fairly confident that she would run a big race and she did just that. Well done Gwyn, another winner to come from our ‘Horses To Follow‘ video…

Poppy’s owner Jill Phillips is a big supporter of the yard, she has enjoyed plenty of success over the years with horses such as Shady Glen, Stynes and High Wells. Congratulations to her! Poppy becomes out 4th bumper winner of the season, a good sign for the future!

The ‘Jumpers Bumpers’ are a really good initiative, they give you opportunities to run these horses that would want a slightly better surface. Quite frankly it was nice to have a runner after three weeks of abandoned meetings.

Here is a video of Max after riding Pop The Champagne yesterday…

We have three runners today, two at Chepstow and one at Kempton.

Chepstow –

EXPLOITEUR kicks the weekend off in the 12:50, a very hot handicap hurdle and a step up in class for him. He has enjoyed a brilliant season so far, winning two in a row and today runs off a mark of 129. There could still be some improvement from this big horse, he will relish the conditions. Hopefully he will have strong place claims. Kielan Woods rides him. Good luck to Shaw Racing and Exploiteurs owners.

THUNDERSOCKSSUNDAE runs in the novice hurdle at 2:50. He shaped really well in his bumper, before finishing down the field in two starts over hurdles. He is a nice horse who will strengthen in time, he needs to brush up on his jumping as he can be a little clumsy at his hurdles. He should get a handicap mark after today which might make things easier for him. Kielan rides him also.

Kempton –

At Kempton AMI DESBOIS makes his reappearance, still the highest rated horse in the yard, Ami Desbois has been a great servant to us and his large, enthusiastic group of owners. He has been a syndicate horse from day one and has given them some days out to remember. He is in the later stages of his career now and we had planned to run him in veterans races, but with recently abandoned meetings, some of his intended targets have passed. This is a very competitive Saturday afternoon handicap but Ami is in great form. Lilly Pinchin takes 5lbs off his back which will help him. Fingers crossed for a good run and most importantly that he enjoys himself.

A very happy birthday to Mick Finn. The yard would not operate without Micks input, he runs a tight ship here at Martins Hill and the results this season reflect that.

Have a great weekend, even though we are in lockdown. A good excuse to sit on the sofa and watch the racing…
