Lockdown begins, we’re all extremely grateful that racing can continue to go ahead. Two owners can also go to watch their horses at the races but with heavier restrictions, still, a big thanks to everyone involved in keeping our sport safe and active.

We will be doing our best to create some entertaining content to cure your lockdown boredom, we will be releasing a new Martins Hill Mercury this weekend!

A long trip to Scotland yesterday for Issac, Ratfacemcdougall and Max, was it worth it? Absolutely! Max had a very rewarding day, riding a double, one for us and one for Fergal O’Brien. Ratfacemcdougall has been slowly falling down the weights and has been knocking on the door in handicaps this season. Yesterday he went and won well, smiles all round for Max and our team who have continued to keep our horses in magnificent form. A really big thank you to the team for all the hard work. Lets hope the handicapper doesn’t punish ‘Ratface’ too much for his success.

Talking of in form horses, many of our have impressed us on the racecourse. On Saturday last week we had three runners and all of them ran with plenty of promise. The highlight was of course MARBLE SANDS at Ascot. What a run from him to win the bumper, historically a useful race. He won it going away at the line, perhaps our most impressive bumper winner of all time? Time will tell, but we dream. Another great day for David and Jacqueline Adams, what an exciting bunch of horses they have!

Others to note, FLANN ran a pleasing race at Hereford in the bumper. Flann is a big horse who has taken a little bit of time, he was close to a run before the lockdown but the suspension of racing put an end to that plan. The extra time over the summer has done him plenty of favours, he’s a different horse this season. We look forward to seeing him over obstacles.

NEW ZEALANDER, our Winter Racing Club horse ran really well at Huntingdon to finish 4th, more progression for him.

It was also really encouraging to see WILDE WATER return to the track after a long break, he also pleased us by finishing 5th.

We have three runners today, jump racing returns to Newbury and we run two horses there. We also have a runner at Market Rasen…

Market Rasen –

ALEXANDER THE GREY – 2:07 – ATG has not really shown his best form this summer and has fallen 5lbs below his last winning mark. A frustrating horse who is very difficult to win with, he often runs well in defeat. Good ground is key to him posting his best efforts and he should get that today. It could be his last run this season as he will start to loose his ground. We hope that he will be in the places if back to his best. His regular rider, Lilly Pinchin, does the steering.

Newbury –

SAMMYLOU – 2:30 – Sammy has had a very productive summer, he started summer with an official rating of 100, he runs today off a mark of 119 after three wins and a place in 5 runs. All his wins have come at his beloved Newton Abbot. He stepped up in class last time and ran his heart out to win. He is always held up in running and does his best work at the end of the race. Another step up into classier company today and this will be tougher. He is well and will always try, today might be his last run of the season as well as he loves summer ground. Kielan Woods rides him.

PHANTOMOFTHEOSCAR – 4:15 – A well named son of Oscar for David and Jaqueline Adams, he has taken a little longer to strengthen than some of our young horses. He is bred to be a chaser and everything he does in the meantime is a bonus. A lovely horse for the future, today will be a good experience for him in a very strong bumper.

We schooled some of our bumper horses this week, THUNDERSOCKSSUNDAE, GETTHEPOT and AVIEWTOSEA all had a pop. Videos will appear in the Mercury but there are some pictures below.

Enjoy the rest of the week, stay safe and remember to look out for The Martins Hill Mercury!
