This summer really seems to be flying by. It’s September already and that means one thing, the winter horses are getting closer and closer to being ready.
Summer jump racing has been really competitive this year and after having no racing at all in the spring, we’ve really enjoyed running summer horses, however seeing the likes of Ask Ben. Ami Desbois and Dublin Four on the gallops does get you very excited!
Wednesday was ladies day for us, we ran three mares! Jessica Rabbit and Homing Star both ran in the same race, the Conditional Jockeys Hurdle at Uttoxeter, while we sent Missthecuddles up to Hexham to run in a Handicap Hurdle.
Jessica Rabbit didn’t seem to enjoy the ground at Uttoxeter. the ground ended up being quite hard work and towards the end of the day there were many non runners. We hope that ‘Jess’ will have her day this summer but conditions will have to be perfect. Homing Star ran a much improved race to finish 5th. Lilly gave her a very patient ride and switched her off early, she settled much better. She probably didn’t quite see out the trip, we will try to find a race over slightly shorter next time.
A long trip up to Hexham for Issac and Missthecuddles, she ran a blinder to finish 2nd, the front two were a long way clear of the rest of the field. Tom Bellamy was in the saddle and gave her a great ride. The ground looked fairly testing at Hexham and again many non runners. Missthecuddles seemed to enjoy the test.
Some feedback from an owners point of view at Uttoxeter…
The racecourse tried really hard to make owners feel safe and welcome. There was easy access to the parade ring and owners could stand on the outside to view their horses. There was a designated room for refreshments and food. Owners had a soup and a large afternoon tea. The bar was also open. There was also great viewing options. with many of the big screens out of operation on racecourses, Uttoxeter decided to let owners into the private boxes to view the race. This was a great idea. You could view the whole track, hear the commentary and even watch it on the screen inside the box if it was raining. There was also areas for trainers and jockeys to give feedback to owners after the race. Hats off to Uttoxeter!
Phil Crane joined us to see Jessica Rabbit, he was also complimentary of his day out.
