A big week for British sport…
It was almost like going back 10 years watching Andy Murray return to Wimbledon to beat his first two rivals. He was knocked out convincingly in his third match, but a huge achievement to get back to playing at all. Andy had been suffering from a hip injury for many years and at one point retirement looked on the cards. Then cyclist Mark Cavendish won two stages in the Tour de France, again injuries have scuppered his career for a couple of years and it looked like the game might be up. A brilliant sight to see him winning again.
Tonight is a big one for England, a win against Ukraine would see England reach the semi finals of the Euro’s. A very big night indeed for Gareth Southgate and his young squad! I wonder how many football related horse names will be registered if England reach the final? There will no doubt be a ‘Presenting Southgate’ or a ‘Getaway Mancini’.
Yesterday we ran two horses at Newton Abbot, both Eagles Realm and Jessica Rabbit ran their races. Jessica Rabbit is such a consistent horse, she’s finished in the first three places in her last six starts! She can however be a little frustrating, often travelling so well before not finding a lot off the bridle. Yesterdays trip probably did stretch her a little bit. Eagles Realm jumped very well before becoming outpaced in a slowly run race, a pleasing effort none the less.
Dan has been busy breaking in our youngsters, a big team of young horses have joined the yard this Spring/Summer. Below you can see pictures of David and Jackie’s new Sholokhov gelding. An absolutely gorgeous horse who is already quite popular with the staff.
It’s lovely to see the staff start to return from their holidays, many have had well deserved breaks. One member of staff that returned yesterday (and not from a holiday) was our conditional jockey Lilly. Lilly suffered a bad fall at Chepstow on Grand National day and has been out for three months. It was fantastic to see her back on a horse after so long, she has been looking forward to it for a long time, a good morning!
No jump racing in this country today, the Coral Eclipse is the highlight at Sandown. We will have no runners this weekend. Hopefully the ground dries up for Hattaab on Monday!
Have a great weekend, lets home Football comes home!
