It’s been a positive week for the team at Martins Hill, although at times frustrating!
Ask Henry looked to have the race at his mercy yesterday before jumping the 2nd last. He actually appeared to jump the hurdle fast and well, but lost his footing on landing and sadly came down. It appeared to look like quite a nasty fall for Kielan Woods, but he and Henry were both swiftly on their feet. They’re tough these National Hunt jockeys! Frustrating, but we were very relieved that everyone was ok, Henry will have other days.
Andaleep ran a very nice race at Kempton on Wednesday night to finish 3rd. He’s probably just in the grip of the handicapper, but he’s certainly a trier. Andaleep has been a different horse since getting his head in front for the first time, he knows how to win and loves his racing. He’s only small, but he’s tough. He’s a really fun horse for his owners.
Our two debutants ran really promising races at Hereford. The team here, led by Mick Finn, have got a great record in bringing horses back from long absences and they did just that with Ajay’s Way’s. He ran a really nice race to finish 6th. He will be a horse to keep an eye on, especially over further in time. Alfoski also pleased us in the bumper, he raced with lots of enthusiasm though the race and just lacked for experience when horses started to quicken. The penny definitely dropped though and he ran on strongly to the line. He’ll be a lovely big chaser one day after running over hurdles this season.
We have a busy weekend of runners!
Today we run three horses at Doncaster…
THUNDERSOCKASSUNDAE runs in the Novices Hurdle at 12:25, he impressed us when finishing 2nd in his bumper at Ffos Las behind a useful looking horse. He also had nicely bred horses in behind him who have run well since. He looks to be in a deep race today but we think a lot of him. We wouldn’t be surprised if he were to run a nice race.
HATTAAB has run well through the summer without winning. He is a hard horse to win with and can sometimes be his own worst enemy. A repeat of his efforts at Southwell and Wincanton earlier in the season would see him have places chances in this, but it depends on which Hattaab will turn up! He runs in the Handicap Hurdle at 12:55.
JESSICA RABBIT must be almost the unluckiest horse in the yard, she has run lots of good races without getting her head in front. Today is what will most likely be her final start for us before she heads to the sales. She will make a fun horse for the right person and we hope today she can end on a winning note! She runs in the Handicap Hurdle at 2:00.
Kielan Woods rides all of our runners today, best of luck to all of the connections!
Tomorrow we have three more runners and a nice bunch at that…
At Doncaster DUBLIN FOUR makes his chasing debut for us. We really love this big chestnut gelding. He was an impressive winner over hurdles but should be a better chaser. One to watch! DAYDREAM AULMES returns to the track after his horrific fall at Ascot two years ago. A magical effort by Mick and the team to nurse him back to full health, he is a horse with lots of ability and it will be interesting to see how he goes after his long absence.
At Bangor we run FLANN in another bumper. He will want an obstacle soon but it’s beneficial to get more experience into him before. He would definitely have place chances in a bumper as he does show plenty of speed at home, especially for a big horse.
Some really positive news during the week that spectators will start to be allowed back into racecourses, depending on the tier restrictions. We can’t wait to hear more atmosphere on the racecourses.
Here are some pictures from a misty Martins Hill…
