Luck… always important that you have luck on your side in our sport!
You might of seen that there was a double rainbow over the yard on Wednesday evening and since then we’ve had another winner! I must add though that Eyeofthescorpions win at Bangor was just luck, instead it was a reflection of a good hard working team at home and an exciting horse for the future.
Eyeofthescorpion was returning from a 270 day lay-off and running against summer fit horses. A couple of which were progressive. We knew we had a nice horse on our hands, you only have to go through the form of Scorps Doncaster race to see that, but to win first time out after time off takes a lot of doing. You can get a horse fit at home, but nothing beats race fitness and Scorp has every right to come on from the race. He also is from a family full of stayers so you’d expect him to enjoy 3 miles over time.
A lovely prospect for his owners to enjoy, we also have his full sister Philapa Sue. She is a spitting image of him and shows us all of the right signs!
Another winner last week, Andaleep on the flat at Sandown. Well he’s been a superstar the last two summers and is a Sandown specialist. He feels like his turned a bit of a corner at home, sometimes he can take a few runs to get going. Macy who rides him at home was quietly confident that he’d run a big race, well done to her! There is a race back at Sandown for him next week, as long as the rain doesn’t get into the ground too much. If he wins another one at the track he’ll have to have a statue…
Lovely to have visitors in the yard this weekend. Howard who used to own Alexander The Grey popped in to see Philapa Sue and Dehradun.
Alexander The Grey and his clever mind… he is now retired from racing. He finishes his racing career with 38 runs, one win. But the stats do not tell a true tale, he placed in 11 races and was a bit of a hero at home. He was a bombproof jumper and was a super lead horse for the babies. He’s been at Martins Hill for a long time and how has a lovely home where he will be learning new skills.
On the gallops, more fresh horses! Some fresher than others, some are just naughty (Barrakhov comes to mind). The winter horses are making nice progress and these early stages are mainly about getting their backs down a bit. It’s always an exciting time of year, we can watch them and dream.
You may of seen on social media a bit of the Martins Hill luck rubbed off on Jason Watson. He popped in to ride a couple of horses yesterday and ended up riding a treble at Doncaster. Well done to him, riding very well indeed!
Today is the last jumps meeting for a couple of weeks. A good chance for the jockeys to have a holiday, play golf and relax. I’m sure Kielan Woods will still be flat out working!
We are off to the sales next week. Missthecuddles, Skipthecuddles, Alfoski, Fleeting Visit and Cast in Grey all go. If you want some more information on any of them please call.
